The Hyena Kill - Atomised
When Atomised dropped in May 2016, The Hyena Kill made their debut with more than just noise — they announced themselves as a force. Self-released on their Proud Cow imprint, and recorded with raw intensity at The Grand Studio in Clitheroe then polished through mastering at Abbey Road, the album offers eight tracks of visceral rock grit, emotional urgency, and moments of darkness that linger long after the riffs fade.
From the first crash of Crosses, you’re thrown into ferocious riffing and uncompromising energy. Your Loss and Tongue Tied shift the gears into chaos and rhythmic punch, while tracks like Still Sick deliver breakdowns so brutal they almost feel sculpted out of tension. And then there’s The Waiting Room (featuring Sally Mason), a beautiful moment of contrast — eerie, atmospheric, a brief lull before the title track Atomised takes you through its storm-laden climax.
What makes Atomised so compelling is its balance. It’s unapologetically heavy, fearlessly angsty, yet aware of dynamics — of when to hold back and when to smash through. Steven Dobb’s vocals move between roar, snarl and heartfelt confession; Lorna Blundell’s drums pound with muscular precision. The production leaves in the grime, the feedback and the natural distortion, but makes sure every hit lands, every shift in tempo matters.
The themes here are gritty: disillusionment, frustration, raw emotional edges. The Hyena Kill aren’t trying to comfort; they’re confronting. From rejection to anger to loss, the lyrics bite because they feel lived-in. And the way these songs build — aggression, release, rage, calm — creates a journey. Atomised is both an arrival and an unleashing.
What makes Atomised shine in the APF catalogue is that it captures a band at full throttle, carving out a space in the UK heavy alternative scene with personality, intensity, and no compromise. It’s a debut that burns, rattles, and haunts — one that still feels vital.
