Trevor’s Head - Soma Holiday

When Soma Holiday dropped on 30 April 2018, Trevor’s Head arrived with an album that feels like a kaleidoscope of riffs, moods, and audacious energy. Across its 13 tracks, the trio—Aaron Strachan, Roger Atkins, and Matt Ainsworth—blend stoner groove, punk ferocity, grunge attitude and psychedelic detours into something messy, surprising, honest.

You’re pulled in first by Sleepstate, its lush synths and heavy-desert thrust setting the tone, and from there the album spins through jagged punk cuts (Billion Dollar Fart), odd little interludes (Writer’s Block), and more momentous pieces like Ghost and Welcome (The Unburdening) that stretch into proggy expanses. The dynamics shift constantly: one moment raw and snarling, the next hesitate into eerie calm, before ripping back into distorted deluge.

Production on Soma Holiday leans into its quirks. Recorded at Foel Studio, engineered by Mike Bew, Gazz Rogers, and Tom Wild (who also handled mixing and mastering), the sound is rich but rough-edged—each guitar crunch, synth swell, drum hit, and vocal twist is laid bare with character. There’s space in the album for atmosphere and weirdness without losing grip on heavy riff and urgency.

The physical presentation matches the ambition: a digipak CD with a 4-panel booklet, wrapped in cello, bolstered by artwork (by Edu Canalejo) and visual identity that balances gritty and cosmic. Limited runs, sold out fast — this is a record that demanded attention as a whole package.

Soma Holiday feels like a moment of growth and unrestrained creativity for Trevor’s Head. It’s not a polished pop-metal record, but that’s the point. It’s weird, it’s loud, it’s full of ideas. For anyone who loves their heavy music with a little left-turn, some colour, and a sense of humour, this album offers plenty.
