Corrupt Moral Altar - Eunioa
When Eunoia surfaced on 23 August 2017, Corrupt Moral Altar struck at the heart of chaos, disquiet and visceral grind. Eleven tracks long, it’s a relentless torrent—raw, cerebral, atmospheric—where the fury of hardcore and grind meets moments that stretch outward into a darker, reflective space.
From the opening Human Cry, which rips through disillusion and existential dread, to the dense concluding track Five Years, the album twists through distrust, social decay, and personal despair. Songs like Engineering Consent and Crime and Disease jab with political and societal critique; Survivor’s Guilt and Burning Bridges and Burning Homes evoke emotional fallout and the ashes of relationships. Born In The Caul adds unsettling imagery; Night Chant wraps invocations of discontent in rhythm, pace, and pounding drums.
Recorded, mixed and mastered at Vagrant Recordings, the sound is punishing but never muddy. Each guitar chord, drum blast, vocal scream is sharp enough to puncture yet heavy enough to bury. Tom Dring’s drumming cuts like jagged edges, while vocals — mostly from Chris Reese, with backing from John Cooke and Adam Clarkson — shift in tone depending on what the moment demands: raw hate, chant, anguish. A violin on Five Years adds a strange, mournful wrinkle — beauty steeped in distortion.
Artwork by Chris Catterall complements the music’s themes: bleak, raw, lived-in. The LP’s format—limited edition 180gsm vinyl, matte finish sleeve, with insert & poster—makes it more than just a record: it’s something you hold, a physical object bearing scars as well as sound.
Eunoia isn’t comfortable. It doesn’t offer refuge. It invites you to stare at the rot, the contradictions, the angers — to sit in them, feel them, maybe learn something. In doing so, Corrupt Moral Altar showed that their vision could be more than noise: it could break you open, force you to think, and leave you changed.
