The Hyena Kill - Spun

When Spun dropped in April 2018, The Hyena Kill turned up the dial—not just in volume, but in depth, texture and mood. After cutting their teeth with rawer, more aggressive outings, this EP sharpened their sound: balancing emotional intensity, crushing riffs and atmospherics in ways that felt both immediate and expansive.

Right from Exit Mask, the EP launches you head-first into raw power. Fierce riffs, pounding drums, vocals that roar with urgency—there’s no easing in. Panic Womb pushes the chaos even further, short, jagged, disorienting. Then Ribbons, Pound Of Flesh and Dare To Swim (feat. Stefanie Mannaerts) pull you into broader territory: more space, more emotional contrast, haunting moments before the storm returns. The closing track Cells leaves you lingering in atmosphere even after the distortions fade.

What makes Spun special is how it expands without losing touch with its core rawness. The production (Andy Hawkins at The Nave Studios, Leeds; mastered by Dave Draper) gives the EP clarity when needed and grit where it counts. The dynamics are more varied than previous releases—they stretch the quiet and rage in ways that feel earned.

The Spun EP showed that The Hyena Kill were capable of more than just heaviness—it proved they could move the listener, crafting textures of tension, release, and catharsis. It’s a defining point in their catalogue: visceral and atmospheric, weighty and haunting, a powerful stepping stone toward what came next.
